Elephant Drone Behavior Tracking

Project Details:

The Elephant Drone Behavior Tracking project was a collaboration between the Colossal Foundation and Save the Elephants that explored how drone technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning could support elephant conservation and behavioral research.

During the project, a fleet of drones equipped with high-resolution and infrared cameras collected detailed behavioral data on African elephants in their natural habitat. The data was analyzed using advanced machine learning algorithms to identify, track, and map elephant movements and social interactions.

In Partnership With

Save the Elephants works to secure a future for elephants. Specializing in elephant research, the organization provides scientific insights into elephant behavior, intelligence, and long-distance movements and applies them to the challenges of elephant survival. High-tech tracking and other tools help Save the Elephant work towards a harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.

The project sought to develop innovative tools capable of identifying both individual and collective elephant behaviors, generating new insights into elephant ecology and conservation. By combining cutting-edge technology with field research, the collaboration contributed to a deeper understanding of elephant behavior and demonstrated the potential of AI-enabled wildlife monitoring.

Save the Elephants and the Colossal Foundation collaborated on this initiative from November 2023 through May 2026.

The technological sophistication of modern drones, combined with appropriate analysis including the use of Machine Learning and AI expertise, will reveal many novel insights into elephant behavior and ecology. And the better we understand elephants, the more we can help to secure a future for these iconic giants.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE EFFORT

Drone Technology:

A small fleet of drones equipped with high-resolution and infrared cameras captures detailed behavioral data on elephants. These drones allow for non-invasive, continuous monitoring of elephants in their natural habitat.

Machine Learning and A.I.:

Advanced machine learning algorithms process the data collected by the drones. These algorithms label elephants and automatically identify individual and collective social behaviors, enabling researchers to analyze large datasets efficiently.
