Project Details:
The Elephant Drone Behavior Tracking project is a groundbreaking collaboration between the Colossal Foundation and Save the Elephants, designed to revolutionize elephant conservation through cutting-edge technology.
This project employs a fleet of drones equipped with high-resolution and infrared cameras to capture extensive behavioral data on African elephants in their natural habitat. The data collected by the drones is processed using artificial intelligence (A.I.) and advanced machine learning algorithms that detect, track, and map the location of elephants in their natural habitat. Eventually, the team aims to use these tools to reveal novel insights into elephant behavior and ecology by automatically identifying individual and collective social behaviors.
Researchers at The Colossal Foundation and Save the Elephants are already using drones and A.I. workflows to organize and standardize vast amounts of video data collected. These sophisticated tools allow for better observation and monitoring of elephants, and offer insights to better address the growing threats of wildlife crime, poaching, and human-elephant conflict, which have led to a significant decline in elephant populations.
