Search for Lost Species

Project Details:

A vital aspect of conservation includes discovering unknown species and rediscovering “lost species” not seen in decades. Protecting these creatures, who are often on the brink of extinction, is crucial for preventing further biodiversity loss.

A vital aspect of conservation includes discovering unknown species and rediscovering “lost species” not seen in decades. Protecting these creatures, who are often on the brink of extinction, is crucial for preventing further biodiversity loss. The Search for Lost Species Program is aimed at finding species that have not been documented in at least a decade, and sometimes much longer. To date, they have compiled a list of 4,300 plant, animal, and fungi species that are “lost” to science. From this extensive research, our partners have developed a list of the Most Wanted lost species, focusing on those with the highest conservation priority.

If we lose something we didn't know we had, even our technology won't be able to bring it back.

The Colossal Foundation is proud to support the Search for Lost Species program to rediscover and prevent the loss of these species. This collaboration harnesses the power of technology and global conservation efforts to locate and protect species that have eluded scientific observation for years. By focusing on the Most Wanted species, the initiative has already rediscovered 11 species, rekindling hope and optimism for conservation.
